CASA for Kids of East Texas is a non-profit 501 C 3 corporation serving Smith, Van Zandt, and Wood Counties.  Our mission is to recruit, train, and monitor court appointed volunteers to serve as an independent voice in court for abused and neglected children.  In 2006 we served 544 children from our 3 counties alone.  A CASA volunteer is appointed to a case upon removal of the child(ren) by Child Protective Services.  This is often a scary and unknown time for these children.  CASA volunteers offer a constant figure in the life of an abused and neglected child.  We spend time with the child getting to know their personality and abilities so that we can make accurate statements pertaining to the best interest of the child when in court.  During the time we are involved in the child’s case, safe and permanent placement is always our goal.

CASA volunteers offer the following to communities where they are present:

  • CASA volunteers spend most of their volunteer time in contact with a child.
  • CASA volunteers spend significantly more time in contact with a child than a paid guardian ad litem.
  • CASA volunteers are far more likely than paid attorneys to file written reports.
  • CASA volunteers are highly effective in getting their recommendations accepted in court. In four out of five cases, all or almost all CASA volunteer recommendations are accepted.
  • When a CASA volunteer is assigned, a higher number of services are ordered for children and families.
  • A child with a CASA volunteer is more likely to be adopted.
  • A child with a CASA volunteer is as likely to be reunified with their birth parent as a child without a CASA volunteer.
  • A child with a CASA volunteer is less likely to re-enter the child welfare system. The proportion of re-entries is consistently reduced by half.

If you're not able to serve as a CASA volunteer, but believe in the need for helping abused and neglected children, you can still make a significant difference.

Your local CASA program is a not-for-profit organization and affiliate of Texas CASA and the National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association. Your tax-deductible gift to CASA will support the training of volunteers so they can be there when an abused or neglected child needs someone most.

Next to your time, your financial support of CASA is the most valuable contribution you can make to help children who do not have the representations they desperately need in court.
